Push Retail

Rod was invited to join the very new Officeworks team at the business' outset in 1994. He travelled with the senior management team to study the U.S. Office supplies superstore concepts and then tailored a format for Australia.

Working very closely with the Merchandise, Marketing and Operations teams in particular, Rod and his team developed all aspects of the store design, from the architectural and interior design to the fixtures and fittings, equipment and signage. An extremely fast-track and tightly-managed program saw the first store opened in Richmond within just 14 weeks of the business being established.

After some minor refinements to the store design and cost plan (and with fantastic sales figures!), the design standards and development processes were documented, consultant teams were established, and everything was put in place to enable the rollout of stores to proceed immediately.

After opening the first five stores (and having planned many more in the pipeline) Rod started his own retail store development consulting practice in 1995 and went on to develop Officeworks' Facilities Management strategy and Essential Services compliance systems to prepare Officeworks for its future challenges.

One of Australia's greatest retail success stories; Officeworks has since grown to well over 100 stores nationally.
